With the large, sturdy key in hand Lady Adeline inserted it into the lock and opened the door. The odour of stagnation came out like a plosive consonant.

He was blind-folded. The smallest touch could break the spell. Do not listen. Do not speak. Remington could only imagine.

It was a room of darkness and unmoved air. In his mind he saw the old study of Sir Harold Redwald, of walls of bookcases and the collection of 150 books that then constituted the valuable library of King Ethelheart in the Middle Ages, each one fastened with loops of chains that bound them to the wood—to stop them from being stolen, or stop them from leaving by their own volition. Moving incrementally as a vine slithers across a trellis, Remington breathed cautiously and carefully as he moved across the stone floor, the stick he held afore him slashing back and forth. Then a wooden tap sounded. The cherrywood desk. The chair on which Harold sat.

Bloated and deformed and decaying and as stiff as a wooden grave marker. Or quiet and in studious study, ravenly watching Remington but saying nothing. A state of neither life nor death nor even the in-between. Redwald’s face bloated and swollen from necrotic gas. Or Redwald smiling, his hand lifting—fingernails yellow and cracked but growing—waving. Index finger hushing.

Silence.

On the desk: a glass drinking cup. Light spilled onto it and the cup glimmered green. It was entirely empty.

The glass shifted colour for a moment as he picked it up.
